MAMMA MIA! STARRING SCOTT WATSON AS BILL
Words cannot describe how much PURE JOY there is in performing Mamma Mia, especially with this fantastic cast at one of my favorite theatres to perform in at Mill Mountain.
I played Bill in this production, and was surprised by the depth and emotion of a character inhabiting an ABBA extravaganza. While at the end we all do don platform-boots and dance to Waterloo, there are some really special quiet moments in this show that I cherished most of all.
As always, wonderful direction by Ginger Poole Avis and inspired choreography by Kristen Brooks Sandler made this an enormous crowd pleaser, and I can’t wait to get back into a boa again sometime in the near future and do Mamma Mia again.
“MAMMA MIA!” SYNOPSIS
"Mamma Mia!" is a lively and feel-good jukebox musical written by Catherine Johnson, featuring the hit songs of the popular Swedish group ABBA. The story takes place on a beautiful Greek island and follows the adventures of a young woman named Sophie as she tries to uncover the identity of her father before her wedding day.
Sophie, who lives on the island with her mother Donna, discovers her mother's diary and learns that there are three potential candidates who could be her father. Determined to have her father walk her down the aisle, Sophie sends invitations to all three men, pretending to be her mother in the hopes that she will recognize her real father when she sees him.
As the wedding day approaches, the three men arrive on the island, unaware of why they have been invited. Their arrival sparks confusion, surprises, and a whirlwind of emotions. Sophie confides in her best friends, Ali and Lisa, about her secret plan, and they join her in trying to unravel the mystery.
Donna, Sophie's independent and spirited mother, is shocked to see her former lovers again after twenty years. The encounters with the three potential fathers—Sam, a wealthy American architect; Harry, a British banker; and Bill, a carefree Australian writer—rekindle old memories and stir up unresolved feelings.
Meanwhile, the story is punctuated by the iconic ABBA songs, including "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," "Take a Chance on Me," and many more. The catchy music and energetic dance numbers add to the joyous and uplifting atmosphere of the play.
As the plot unfolds, secrets are revealed, relationships are tested, and love triumphs. Through laughter, tears, and heartwarming moments, the characters come to understand the importance of family, forgiveness, and the power of love.
"Mamma Mia!" is a celebration of ABBA's timeless music and a story that embraces the themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery. The infectious energy, colorful costumes, and enchanting setting of a Greek island make it a beloved and unforgettable theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.
